Tuesday July 7, 2026- Grace Before Growth

Devotional

One of the most beautiful patterns in the ministry of Jesus is that grace always precedes growth. Jesus never begins with a demand. He begins with a relationship. Before He asked His disciples to leave their nets, He called them to Himself. Before He challenged people to live differently, He showed them they were deeply loved. Before He corrected hearts, He connected with them. This is not weakness. It is divine wisdom.

Human nature often believes that change earns acceptance. We think, "If I can just fix myself, then God will love me." But the Gospel tells a completely different story. God's love is not the reward for your transformation.

It is the reason transformation becomes possible.

When Jesus says, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me," notice the order. He knows them before He speaks of their following Him. Relationship comes first. Following flows from being known.

Jesus never asks us to earn His affection. He invites us to experience it.

That changes everything.

When you know you are loved, obedience becomes an act of gratitude rather than an attempt to gain approval. His commands are no longer heavy burdens; they become invitations into a fuller life.

Grace: The Foundation for Growth

Grace is not the opposite of growth.

Grace is the foundation of growth.

Many people misunderstand grace as permission to remain the same. But biblical grace never leaves a person unchanged. Grace meets us where we are, embraces us in our brokenness, and then lovingly leads us toward who God created us to become.

Grace says:

• "You are accepted, but I love you too much to leave you here."

• "You are forgiven, but I also want to restore you."

• "You are My child, and now I will teach you how to live like one."

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus consistently demonstrated this pattern.

He welcomed sinners before calling them to repentance.

He healed broken people before sending them back into their communities.

He forgave failures before restoring purpose.

His grace did not ignore sin. It overcame sin by offering something stronger than shame—the transforming power of God's love.

The same grace that saves us is the grace that sanctifies us.

It is not merely God's pardon.

It is God's power at work within us.

Growing Because You Are Loved

Think about the people whose words have most influenced your life.

Usually, they were people you trusted.

Correction from a stranger often feels like criticism.

Correction from someone who loves you feels like care.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd. His voice is never motivated by condemnation but by compassion. Every instruction He gives is designed to protect, strengthen, and mature His sheep.

When you read Scripture through the lens of grace, even conviction becomes an expression of God's love.

His Word is not a weapon to shame you.

It is a mirror to help you become more like Christ.

His correction is not rejection.

It is direction.

Every time He calls you higher, it is because He has already called you His own.

Living in Grace Every Day

The Christian life is not about striving to deserve God's love.

It is about learning to live from the love you have already received.

As you grow in Christ:

• Let grace silence the voice of shame.

• Let grace give you courage to be honest about your weaknesses.

• Let grace remind you that every failure is an opportunity to experience God's mercy again.

• Let grace move you from obligation to joyful obedience.

Growth that is driven by fear eventually exhausts us.

Growth that is fueled by grace transforms us.

Because when you know you are loved, following Jesus becomes a response of worship rather than a requirement for acceptance.

Reflection Question

How does knowing that Jesus leads with compassion rather than correction change the way you approach Him when you have fallen short?

Also ask yourself:

Am I trying to earn God's love through my performance, or am I allowing His grace to transform the way I live?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for loving me before You ever asked anything of me. Thank You that Your grace found me before I found You. Help me to stop striving for Your approval and instead rest in the assurance that I am already loved because of Your finished work. Let Your grace become the foundation of my obedience, the strength for my growth, and the motivation for my daily walk with You. Shape my heart through Your compassion so that I may become more like You each day. In Your name I pray, Amen.
