Tuesday May 5th, 2026 Devotional- Serve First, Speak Later

Scripture: John 13:35

Devotional: People are often more open to what you say after they’ve experienced how you love. Service builds bridges where words alone cannot. Before we try to correct, convince, or convert someone, we should care for them. Love demonstrated creates space for truth to be received.

Jesus makes it clear that the defining mark of His followers is not just what we believe—but how we love. And that love is not abstract or theoretical—it is expressed through action. Too often, we rush into conversations ready to fix people, correct behavior, or share truth, but we haven’t first earned the right to be heard through genuine care.

Service disarms defensiveness. It lowers walls that arguments cannot break down. When people feel seen, valued, and supported, their hearts become more receptive. Even Jesus, though He carried all truth, often met needs before addressing issues. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, and showed compassion before He spoke correction.

Serving first requires humility. It means setting aside our need to be right in order to be effective. It means choosing patience over pressure and presence over performance. When we lead with love, our words no longer feel like judgment—they feel like guidance.

Ask yourself today: Have I been trying to speak into spaces where I haven’t first served?Because when love goes first, truth is more easily received.

Daily Challenge: Serve someone before offering advice, correction, or your opinion.

Pause and ask: “How can I help before I speak?”Look for a practical need—meet it quietly and sincerely.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for loving me not just with words, but with action. You saw my need and stepped in with grace, mercy, and sacrifice. Help me to reflect that same kind of love in my daily interactions.

Teach me to slow down when I’m quick to speak and quick to correct. Give me the discernment to recognize when someone needs compassion more than conversation. Shape my heart so that I don’t just want to be heard—but that I genuinely want to help.

Lord, remove any pride in me that seeks to prove a point rather than serve a person. Help me to value people over being right. Let my actions speak so clearly that my words become easier to receive.

Give me eyes to see needs that others overlook, hands that are willing to serve without recognition, and a heart that finds joy in lifting others up. Let my love reflect Your love—intentional, patient, and selfless.

And when I do speak, let my words be seasoned with grace, rooted in truth, and carried on the foundation of love I have already shown. May my life be a bridge that leads people closer to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
