Wednesday April 29, 2026 Devotional -Draw Near Intentionally

Scripture: James 4:8

Devotional Thought: This scripture is both a promise and a responsibility. God promises closeness—but He requires pursuit. Drawing near is not automatic; it is intentional. It is a daily decision to turn away from distractions and turn toward God with focus, hunger, and expectation.

Jacob understood this when he wrestled with God and declared, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.” That wasn’t casual—that was desperate, determined pursuit. Jacob refused to settle for a moment—he pressed until he had an encounter. And that encounter didn’t just bless him—it changed him. His name was changed to Israel, and his walk was forever different.

Another powerful example is found in the life of the woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:25–34). For twelve years, she suffered, searched, and struggled. But when she heard about Jesus, she made up her mind to draw near. She pressed through the crowd, pushed past barriers, and said within herself, “If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.” That wasn’t convenience—that was commitment.

Her pursuit paid off. The moment she touched Jesus, virtue flowed, and her life was transformed. What’s powerful is that Jesus stopped and acknowledged her—not because of the crowd, but because of her faith-filled pursuit.

Too often, we settle for surface-level encounters—quick prayers, distracted worship, inconsistent devotion. But real transformation happens when we press in, when we prioritize His presence, and when we refuse to leave unchanged.

Drawing near requires effort, but it is always worth it. Because when you draw near to God, He responds. And when He responds, He doesn’t leave you the same.

Prayer:

Father, I thank You for the invitation to come close. Thank You that You are not distant, unavailable, or uninterested—but You are always ready to meet me when I seek You. Today, I ask that You place a deeper hunger in my heart for Your presence. Break every spirit of distraction, laziness, and inconsistency that keeps me from pursuing You fully.

Lord, give me the determination of Jacob—to hold on until I am changed. Give me the faith of the woman who pressed through the crowd—help me push past every obstacle, every excuse, and every limitation that tries to block my access to You.

Create in me a disciplined spirit that seeks You daily, not occasionally. Help me to prioritize time with You above everything else that competes for my attention. Teach me how to sit with You, listen to You, and respond to You.

Father, I don’t want shallow encounters—I want depth. I don’t want routine—I want relationship. I don’t want to leave Your presence the same way I came. Transform my mind, renew my heart, and align my desires with Your will.

Draw me closer, Lord, and as I draw near to You, reveal Yourself to me in a deeper way. Let my life reflect the evidence that I have been with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
