MORE THAN AN EMERGENCY BUTTON

Devotional

Imagine having a friend you only hear from when something goes wrong. No regular conversations. No check-ins. No time spent together. You only call when there is a crisis.

That would be difficult to call a relationship. Sometimes we can treat God the same way. We talk to Him when the diagnosis comes, when the bills are due, when the relationship falls apart, when the job is in jeopardy, or when we don't know what else to do.

We know how to call on God in an emergency. But God doesn't want to be our emergency button. He wants to be our everyday companion.

Prayer was never designed to be something we pull out only when life falls apart. Prayer is how we cultivate an ongoing relationship with God. Jesus modeled this kind of life. Prayer was not reserved for emergencies. He prayed before major decisions. He prayed when He was tired. He prayed when He was surrounded by people, and He prayed when He was alone. He prayed in moments of joy and in moments of deep sorrow.

Prayer was woven into the rhythm of His everyday life. That challenges us to ask an honest question: Does God hear from me regularly, or mostly when I need something?

There is nothing wrong with crying out to God in a crisis. Scripture repeatedly invites us to call upon Him when we are in trouble. But if the only time we talk to God is when something is wrong, we are missing the deeper gift of prayer.

God wants more than our emergencies. He wants our everyday moments.

• Talk to Him in the morning before the day gets loud.

• Talk to Him while you're driving.

• Talk to Him while you're working.

• Talk to Him when you're making decisions.

• Talk to Him when you're grateful.

• Talk to Him when you're disappointed.

• Talk to Him when nothing is wrong at all.

The more consistently we pray, the more natural prayer becomes. We begin to recognize God's presence not only in the crisis, but in the ordinary moments of life. And that matters because crises will come. When your prayer life is built only around emergencies, you may find yourself trying to establish a relationship with God in the middle of the storm. But when prayer has already become part of your daily rhythm, you enter the storm with a foundation.

Daily prayer prepares you for difficult days. Prayer may not prevent every storm, but it can teach you where to stand when the storm comes.

Isaiah reminds us that God's house is to be called “a house of prayer.” Prayer was never meant to be occasional. It is meant to characterize the life of God's people. So don't wait for something to go wrong before you talk to God.

• You don't need a crisis to pray.

• You don't need the perfect words.

• You don't need an hour.

• You simply need to show up.

Start with five minutes. Tell God what you're grateful for. Tell Him what you're thinking about.

Listen... Sit quietly... Invite Him into your day... And make prayer a rhythm rather than a reaction... Yesterday we prayed, “Lord, teach me.” Today, we learn to make prayer a daily practice. Don't just call God when you need Him. Walk with Him when you don't. Because God doesn't want to be the voice we hear only in emergencies. He wants to be the presence we recognize every day.

When you look honestly at your prayer life, does God feel more like a daily companion or someone you turn to mainly in a crisis?

Today’s Practice

Before you ask God for anything today, spend five minutes simply talking with Him.

Thank Him for three things. Tell Him what is on your heart. Then sit quietly and remind yourself: “God is with me, not just when I need Him, but every day.”

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I have treated You like an emergency button—calling only when something goes wrong. Teach me to seek You in the ordinary moments of my life, not just the difficult ones. Help me develop a daily rhythm of prayer. Teach me to talk with You when I am grateful, when I am uncertain, when I am making decisions, and when life is going well. I don't want a relationship with You built only around emergencies. I want to walk with You every day. Teach me to show up consistently, to listen for Your voice, and to recognize Your presence in the ordinary moments. Lord, be more than the One I call when I need help. Be the One I walk with every day. In Jesus' name,Amen.
