Definition

The gift of discernment of spirits is the Spirit-given ability to recognize and distinguish between what is from God, what is human, and what is influenced by evil spirits. It provides supernatural insight into the spiritual nature behind actions, words, and situations.

Biblical Examples

In Acts 16:16–18, Paul discerned that the spirit operating in the slave girl was not from God, even though her words sounded accurate. He cast the spirit out, revealing the true source.

Another example is found in Matthew 16:21–23, when Jesus rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind me, Satan.” Though Peter spoke out of concern, Jesus discerned the spiritual influence behind the statement.
