Monday January 19, 2026 Devotional- Lessons from Rock Bottom

Devotional Thought: Jonah didn’t pray when the storm started or when the sailors warned him. He prayed when there was nowhere left to run. Rock bottom silences pride and gives birth to prayer. Jonah’s prayer was not out of comfort, clarity, or courage; it rose out of confinement. He endured the storm, ignored the warnings, and resisted surrender until every escape route was cut off.

Many of us can identify with these three things that Jonah did in his story. How many times have you ENDURED, IGNORED, AND RESISTED simply because you thought you can get yourself out of what you got yourself into? It is amazing that God is fully accessible even when we're in Rebellion or just plain stuck in a stupor yet many of us are looking for the Escape Route that God is intentionally closed off because isolation is the only thing that He can use to grab our full attention. 

Rock bottom has a way of doing what sermons, signs, and storms often cannot—it silences pride. When Jonah could no longer control the situation, justify his decisions, or outrun God’s will, PRAYER FINALLY BECAME HIS ONLY OPTION. That is the paradox of rock bottom: it feels like an ending, but it is often the beginning of honest communication with God. Pride convinces us we can fix it ourselves; desperation reminds us we never could. When there is nowhere left to run, the soul finally turns upward, and prayer is born not out of habit, but out of humility and dependence.

5G Vision Focus — GRACE

Grace shows up when our strength runs out. Jonah did not earn God’s attention by doing the right thing; he received it after doing the wrong thing and finally surrendering. Grace is God meeting us not at our best, but at our lowest, reminding us that His love is not triggered by our performance but by His compassion. When pride is stripped away and self-reliance collapses, grace steps in and says, “I’m still here.” Rock bottom becomes sacred ground because it is often the first place where we stop pretending and start depending. Grace does not wait for us to climb back up; it meets us right where we fell, inviting us to pray, repent, and begin again.

Quote of the Day: Rock bottom is often the moment pride dies and prayer finally lives. 

Prayer: Lord, strip away every layer of pride and self-reliance that keeps me from fully trusting You. Forgive me for the moments I’ve depended on my own strength, wisdom, and control instead of surrendering to Your will. When I’m tempted to look within for answers, remind me that my help comes from You alone. Teach me to lift my eyes above my circumstances, above my failures, and above my fear, and to fix my gaze on You. Break anything in me that resists humility, and shape in me a heart that depends completely on Your grace. When I reach the end of myself, help me remember that I am never at the end of You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
