Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:4–11
Definition
The gift of prophecy is the Spirit-given ability to speak a message from God that strengthens, encourages, and builds up others. It is not about prediction alone, but about delivering God’s heart to His people.
Biblical Examples
In Acts 11:27–28, Agabus prophesied a coming famine, allowing the church to prepare and respond.
In Acts 21:8–9, Philip’s daughters operated in prophecy, demonstrating that this gift was active and widespread in the early church.
Devotional Thought
Prophecy is God speaking through people to people. It brings clarity where there is confusion, encouragement where there is discouragement, and direction where there is uncertainty. This gift is not about personal recognition—it is about edification. True prophecy aligns with God’s Word and points people toward Him, not toward the speaker. When used properly, prophecy strengthens the church and reminds believers that God is still speaking and involved in their lives.
We See Through Scripture That Prophecy:
1. Builds Up and Encourages Others- Prophecy is meant to edify, not tear down. It lifts, strengthens, and brings hope.
Key Insight: If it doesn’t build up, it’s not operating in the heart of true prophecy.
2. Brings Clarity and Direction- Agabus’ prophecy gave the church insight into what was coming, allowing wise preparation.
Key Insight: God speaks to prepare, not to panic.
3. Confirms God’s Presence Among His PeopleWhen prophecy is released, it reminds believers that God sees, knows, and cares.
Key Insight: Prophecy reassures us that God is actively involved in our lives.
How to Walk in the Gift of Prophecy
Stay connected to the Holy Spirit
Know God’s Word – Prophecy must align with Scripture
Speak with humility and love
Be sensitive to God’s timing

Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for the gift of prophecy. Use my voice to encourage, strengthen, and uplift others. Help me to speak only what You give me and to do so with humility and love. Guard my heart from pride and keep me aligned with Your Word. Let my words reflect Your truth and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
