Member Question 1→ Since we started the Failure Series, I’ve been wondering: could what we call failure actually be God dismantling a version of us He never planned to favor?

Member Question 2→ Does God punish us for not answering a call he placed on our life and will our soul be punished for it

These questions speak to the holy tension beneath our Life After Failure Series, and I’m humbled that lives are being transformed by the sermons and teachings.

Failure or Formation? → When God Dismantles What He Never Intended to Bless

Scripture Focus: — Jeremiah 29:11; John 15:2; Romans 8:1; Romans 11:29

Devotional Reflection→ Since we began the Failure Series, this question has surfaced in one form or another→  Could what we call failure actually be God dismantling a version of us He never planned to favor? Scripture suggests the answer is often YES.

God is not in the business of destroying His children—but He will dismantle identities, ambitions, and attachments that would keep us from becoming who He called us to be. What feels like failure is sometimes God lovingly removing a structure that looked successful but was never sustainable in His will. Pruning feels like loss, but it’s always intentional. God cuts back what grows wild so that what is planted by Him can thrive.

Think about an overgrown yard. It looks out of control, chaotic and challenging. But with some time and attention, what was once an area of overgrown vegetation, becomes a beautiful manicured property. Could it be that some of our lives resemble this principle because we’re resisting the pruning necessary to become priceless? And the label “failure” frustrates us from seeing faith.

This leads to the deeper fear many carry in silence→ Does God punish us for not answering a call He placed on our life—and will our soul be punished for it? The answer is sobering, but freeing: GOD DISCIPLINES; HE DOES NOT CONDEMN. Conviction is meant to redirect us, not destroy us. If punishment were the goal, grace would not exist. Scripture makes it clear—our salvation is secured by Christ, not threatened by hesitation. The soul that belongs to Jesus is not revoked because of delay, fear, or missteps.

But what I know to be true is this→ unheeded calling can lead to detours, not damnation. Like Jonah, we may experience storms—not because God has abandoned us, but because He is still pursuing us. God’s discipline is always corrective, never cruel. He disrupts what delays us so that purpose is not lost forever. What we label as failure may actually be God’s mercy—interrupting a path that would have led us away from His best.

5G Vision Connection

  • GRACE — God does not cancel you for hesitation; He covers you while calling you forward.

  • GATHER — Failure often isolates, but God uses community to help us discern redirection.

  • GROW — Dismantling produces maturity; obedience deepens when comfort is removed.

  • GLOW — A pruned life bears clearer witness than a polished performance.

  • GO — Calling delayed is not calling denied. Grace still sends you.

Reflection Questions

  1. What version of me might God be dismantling that no longer aligns with His purpose?

  2. Have I mistaken God’s discipline for rejection or punishment?

  3. Where might God be inviting me to respond again to a call I once avoided?

  4. How would my faith shift if I saw failure as formation rather than finality?

Prayer→ Gracious God,  Thank You for loving me enough to interrupt what no longer serves Your purpose in my life.  Forgive me for interpreting pruning as punishment and discipline as rejection.Help me to trust that when You dismantle, it is because You are rebuilding. Quiet my fear of condemnation and awaken my heart to obedience.  Where I delayed, give me courage. Where I ran, give me clarity.  Where I failed, let grace lead me forward. I surrender my past hesitations and trust You with what comes next. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

FAITH AFFIRMATION

I am not condemned by my hesitation. I am not defined by my failure. God is dismantling what He never intended to favor so that He can establish what He always intended to fulfill. My calling still stands. My soul is secure. And grace is leading me forward. Amen.
