Bold Access to the Father

Theme: I Have Access!

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 10:19–22; Hebrews 4:14–16; Matthew 27:50–51

Devotional Reflection

There is something remarkable about what happened the moment Jesus died on the cross. Matthew 27:51 tells us that the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. This was no ordinary occurrence. It was a divine declaration that, through the finished work of Jesus Christ, the way into the presence of God had been opened.

For generations, the temple veil represented a boundary between the holy presence of God and the people. Under the old covenant, access to the Most Holy Place was restricted. The high priest entered only once a year, on the Day of Atonement, and did so according to the requirements God had established. The veil was a reminder that sin created a barrier between humanity and a holy God.

But when Jesus died, that veil was torn.

Notice that it was torn from top to bottom. This was not humanity trying to reach up to God through good works, religious performance, or personal perfection. It was God making a way for humanity to draw near through the sacrifice of His Son. Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for sin, and His death accomplished what no human effort could accomplish. The barrier was addressed, the price was paid, and the invitation to enter God's presence was extended through Him.

The torn veil declares that through Jesus Christ, you no longer have to stand at a distance from the Father. You have been invited to draw near.

Hebrews 10:19 reminds us that we can enter the Most Holy Place with confidence because of the blood of Jesus. Our confidence does not come from our personal achievements, our religious titles, our church attendance, or our ability to live without making mistakes. Our confidence rests in what Jesus has already accomplished on our behalf.

This truth should transform the way we approach prayer.

Too often, we allow shame, guilt, disappointment, and feelings of inadequacy to keep us at a distance from God. We think that because we have failed, we should remain silent. We believe that because we have struggled, God must be disappointed in us. Sometimes we wait until we feel spiritually strong before we pray, as though prayer is a reward for getting our lives together.

But prayer is not a reward for perfection. It is an invitation to relationship.

God already knows our weaknesses. He knows the thoughts we struggle to express, the burdens we carry in silence, the questions we are afraid to ask, and the mistakes we wish we could undo. We do not come to Him because we have everything figured out. We come because we need Him.

Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace.” Notice that it is called the throne of grace. We approach a holy God, but we approach Him through Jesus Christ, who understands our weaknesses and has made a way for us to receive mercy and grace.

The word boldly is important. It does not mean arrogantly, carelessly, or as though God owes us whatever we demand. Biblical boldness means approaching God with confidence, freedom, and assurance because we trust the access He has provided. We do not have to tiptoe into His presence, wondering whether He will receive us. We come reverently, honestly, and confidently because we belong to Him through Christ.

Think about the relationship between a loving parent and a child. A child who trusts the parent's love does not have to rehearse a perfect speech before asking for help. The child can come with questions, fears, tears, and needs. In a much greater way, we can approach our Heavenly Father with the confidence that He hears us and cares for us.

This does not mean God will give us everything we ask for exactly when we ask for it. Access to the Father is not permission to control His will. It is the privilege of bringing our desires before Him while trusting His wisdom, submitting to His direction, and resting in His love.

Jesus demonstrated this kind of relationship in Gethsemane. He honestly expressed the anguish of His soul, yet surrendered to the Father's will. We, too, can tell God the truth about what we feel while trusting Him with what we cannot control.

When you are afraid, you have access.

When you are confused, you have access.

When you have sinned and need forgiveness, you have access.

When you are celebrating a victory, you have access.

When life has disappointed you and you cannot understand God's plan, you still have access.

Do not confuse a difficult season with a closed door. Do not mistake a delayed answer for God's absence. And do not allow your emotions to convince you that you have been abandoned by the One who invited you into His presence.

The greatest blessing is not simply that God can change your circumstances. It is that, through Jesus Christ, you can know Him personally. You have been invited into a relationship, not merely a religious routine. You can speak to Him in the quietness of your room, call upon Him in the middle of a difficult day, worship Him with fellow believers, and seek His guidance in decisions that no one else understands.

Religion, when reduced to outward performance, can leave us trying to prove that we deserve God's attention. Relationship reminds us that, through Christ, we have been given the privilege of drawing near. Spiritual disciplines still matter, obedience still matters, and reverence still matters—but they are expressions of our relationship with God, not a payment for access to Him.

So today, stop living as though you are locked out of the presence of God. The veil has been torn. Jesus has made the way. You do not have to earn the invitation; you need to respond to it.

You have access to the Father. Come boldly, pray honestly, worship sincerely, and trust Him completely.

The 5G Connection — GATHER

GATHER: Draw Near to God and Make Room for Others

Gathering begins with the privilege of entering God's presence through Jesus Christ. Because we have access to the Father, we are invited to cultivate a consistent life of prayer, worship, and fellowship. We do not gather simply to fulfill a religious obligation; we gather to encounter God, strengthen our faith, and encourage one another.

Our access to God should also influence how we welcome others into the community of faith. If Christ has opened the way for us to draw near, we should not create unnecessary barriers that cause others to feel unwelcome, unworthy, or forgotten. The church should be a place where people encounter truth, experience grace, find spiritual support, and learn to grow in their relationship with God.

We gather because we need God, and we gather because we need one another. When we pray together, carry one another's burdens, and encourage one another in faith, we help create a community where people are reminded that God's grace is available and that they do not have to walk alone.

The GATHER Challenge: Spend intentional time in God's presence today, then reach out to someone who may feel distant from God or disconnected from the church. Offer encouragement, pray with them, or invite them into fellowship. Let your life demonstrate that the door to God's grace is open through Jesus Christ.

Reflection Questions

  1. What has been keeping you from approaching God with confidence—guilt, fear, disappointment, shame, or the belief that you must get everything right first?

  2. How would your prayer life change if you truly believed that, through Jesus Christ, you were welcomed into the Father's presence?

  3. How can you help make your church and fellowship a place where others feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to grow in their relationship with God?

Daily Challenge — Use Your Access

Set aside 15 uninterrupted minutes today to spend with God.

  • Come honestly: Tell God what is really happening in your heart. Do not hide your fears, frustrations, or questions.

  • Come confidently: Thank Jesus for making a way for you to draw near to the Father.

  • Come surrendered: Place one concern you cannot control into God's hands and ask for the grace to trust His will.

  • Extend the invitation: Encourage one person who may be struggling in their faith or feeling disconnected from God.

Do not merely talk about having access. Exercise the privilege of drawing near to God today.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of access through Jesus Christ. Thank You that when Jesus died on the cross, the veil was torn and the way into Your presence was opened. I recognize that I could never earn this privilege through my own goodness, performance, or perfection. It is only because of the sacrifice of Your Son that I can come boldly before Your throne of grace.

Forgive me for the times I have allowed guilt, shame, fear, disappointment, or the opinions of others to keep me at a distance from You. Remind me that Your invitation is not based on my perfection but on the finished work of Jesus Christ. Teach me to pray with confidence, worship with sincerity, and approach You with a heart that is both reverent and trusting.

Father, help me understand that access does not mean control. Give me the humility to surrender my desires to Your will, the patience to wait for Your timing, and the faith to trust Your wisdom when Your answers differ from my expectations. When I am weak, strengthen me. When I am confused, guide me. When I fall, lead me toward repentance and restoration. When I am weary, remind me that I can find mercy and grace in Your presence.

Help me live in the freedom of a genuine relationship with You rather than the fear of religious performance. Let my prayer life become deeper, my faith become stronger, and my heart become more sensitive to Your voice. As I gather with Your people, help me extend the same grace, love, and encouragement that I have received from You. Use me to remind others that through Jesus Christ, they can draw near to You.

Thank You that I do not have to stand at a distance. Thank You that I am invited to come, welcomed by Your grace, and sustained by Your love. I will come boldly, pray honestly, and trust You completely.

In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
