Tuesday July 21, 2026- What Are You Feeding?

Scripture — Psalm 42:1
Devotional
In yesterday's devotion, we acknowledged our spiritual poverty and recognized that we cannot live the Christian life apart from God's grace. Today, Jesus challenges us to examine something just as important—our spiritual appetite.
Take an honest inventory of the last seven days. What occupied your mind the most? What consumed your attention? What did you spend the most time reading, watching, scrolling through, talking about, or pursuing? Those answers reveal more about the condition of your heart than your words ever could.
Your appetite is a compass. It never lies.
Whatever you consistently feed becomes stronger. Whatever you consistently neglect becomes weaker. Feed anxiety, and fear begins to shape your decisions. Feed bitterness, and resentment quietly takes root. Feed comparison, and contentment slowly disappears. But when you feed your soul with God's Word, His presence, worship, prayer, and fellowship, your faith grows stronger than your fears.
Many believers wonder why they feel spiritually dry while spending far more time consuming the world's voices than listening to God's voice. We should not be surprised when our spiritual hunger fades if we continually satisfy ourselves with things that can never truly nourish the soul.
Jesus gives us an incredible promise in the Sermon on the Mount:
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." (Matthew 5:6)
Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not promise to fill the casually interested or the occasionally committed. He promises to satisfy those who hunger and thirst—those who pursue Him with the same urgency that a thirsty traveler seeks water in the desert.
God always responds to genuine spiritual hunger.
The psalmist understood this longing when he declared, "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God." A deer pursued through dry wilderness is desperate for water because its life depends upon it. David says our relationship with God should produce that same longing—not out of duty, but because our souls recognize that only God can satisfy what nothing else can.
Righteousness is not inherited through family traditions, church membership, or years of attendance. It must be pursued every single day. It becomes a daily decision to seek God before the world seeks your attention.
Before opening your social media feed, open God's Word.
Before checking your notifications, check your heart.
Before allowing the noise of the day to dictate your mood, allow the Spirit of God to direct your steps.
Small daily choices create lifelong spiritual appetites.
Living the 5G Vision
At SHI-ROCK Village, our 5G Vision provides a practical pathway for cultivating a healthy spiritual appetite.
Grace reminds us that our hunger begins because God first pursued us. We do not seek Him to earn His love; we seek Him because His grace has already invited us into relationship.
Gather reminds us that spiritual hunger grows in community. Worshiping together, studying Scripture together, and praying together strengthen our desire for God. Hungry believers inspire other believers to hunger for more of Christ.
Glow reminds us that when our hearts are filled with God's presence, His light naturally shines through our words, attitudes, and actions. A nourished soul becomes a visible witness.
Grow reminds us that spiritual maturity never happens accidentally. Growth requires intentional feeding. Every prayer, every chapter of Scripture, every act of obedience, and every moment spent in God's presence develops stronger spiritual muscles.
Go reminds us that what God fills, He also sends. We are not filled merely for our own benefit. We are filled so that we can carry His love, grace, hope, and truth into our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and communities.
The Christian life is not simply about avoiding sin. It is about developing an appetite for the presence of God that becomes greater than our appetite for anything else.
As we continue this journey through the Beatitudes, ask yourself not simply, "Am I busy?" but, "What am I feeding?"
Because eventually, what you feed will determine who you become.
Reflection Questions
If your daily habits were a map, where would they show your heart is actually headed?
What has been feeding your mind more this week—God's truth or the world's distractions?
Which area of the 5G Vision (Grace, Gather, Glow, Grow, or Go) needs the most attention in your life today?
What is one practical change you can make this week to feed your relationship with Christ before anything else?
Quote
"Your appetite is your spiritual compass. It points your life in the direction of your deepest desire. Feed your soul with Christ, and your life will naturally move toward His purpose."
Prayer
Gracious Father, thank You for reminding me that my soul was created to hunger for You. Forgive me for the times I have filled my life with distractions while neglecting the One who truly satisfies. Create within me a deeper longing for Your presence and Your righteousness. Help me to choose Your Word before the world's opinions, prayer before panic, and worship before worry.
Teach me to live the 5G Vision every day. Let Your Grace transform me, help me Gather faithfully with Your people, cause my life to Glow with Your love, continue to help me Grow into the image of Christ, and empower me to Go into the world as a faithful witness of Your Kingdom.
May my greatest desire always be You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
