OBEDIENCE UNLOCKS THE POWER

Devotional

There is something powerful about following instructions.

Most of us have experienced a moment when we were given simple directions but decided to do things our own way. Sometimes we discover that the instructions were not meant to restrict us—they were designed to help us.

God works the same way.

Before the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples in Acts, Jesus gave them a simple instruction:

Wait.

It wasn't complicated.

It wasn't glamorous.

It wasn't exciting.

But it was required.

Jesus told His disciples to remain in Jerusalem until they received the promise of the Father. They had somewhere to go. They had a mission to accomplish. They had a world to reach. But Jesus knew they were not ready to go until they were empowered by the Holy Spirit.

And the disciples had a choice. They could move ahead without the power. Or they could obey Jesus and wait.

They waited.

And their obedience positioned them for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

That pattern is worth sitting with for a moment: Obedience came before the power.

Not the other way around.

Sometimes we want God's power without God's instructions. We want His blessing without His boundaries. We want His promises without His process. We want the fruit without the pruning. We want the victory without the surrender. But God doesn't simply call us to receive His power. He calls us to walk with Him.

Obedience is part of that walk.

John 15 gives us one of the clearest pictures of this relationship. Jesus says:

"I am the vine; ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." — John 15:5 (KJV)

Jesus uses the image of a vine and branches.

A branch doesn't have life in itself.

A branch cannot produce fruit by itself.

A branch doesn't have to struggle to manufacture the life it needs.

It simply has to remain connected to the vine.

The vine provides what the branch needs.

That's the picture Jesus gives us for our relationship with Him.

Connection is everything.

  • When the branch remains connected, life flows.

  • When we remain connected to Christ, His life flows through us.

  • His wisdom begins to influence our decisions.

  • His character begins to shape our responses.

  • His Word begins to govern our choices.

  • His Spirit begins to direct our steps.

  • His power begins to work through our lives.

  • But remaining connected requires more than simply saying we believe in Jesus.

  • It requires obedience.

Obedience says, "Lord, I trust You enough to do what You said." Sometimes obedience will make you do something that doesn't make sense to everybody else.

  • Noah built an ark before there was rain.

  • Abraham left his homeland without knowing the full destination.

  • Peter stepped out of the boat.

  • The disciples waited in Jerusalem when Jesus told them to wait.

  • In each case, obedience required trust.

  • And that's what obedience really is: Trust expressed through action.

It is one thing to say, "I trust God."

It is another thing to obey Him when His Word challenges what you want to do.

It's easy to obey when we agree.

It's harder when obedience requires surrender.

It's easy to obey when the outcome is obvious.

It's harder when we cannot see what God is doing.

It's easy to obey when everyone supports the decision.

It's harder when obedience makes us stand alone.

But sometimes your greatest demonstration of faith is not what you say.

It is what you do after God speaks.

  • There may be something God has already told you to do.

  • Forgive.

  • Apologize.

  • Let go.

  • Give.

  • Serve.

  • Pray.

  • Wait.

  • Speak.

  • Be quiet.

  • Set a boundary.

  • Change a habit.

  • Return to church.

  • Reconnect with someone.

  • Stop compromising.

  • Start trusting.

Whatever it is, you may already know what God is asking.

The question is not always, "What is God saying?"

Sometimes the real question is: "Will I obey what God has already said?"

That's where the struggle often begins. We can spend hours asking God for another word when He is waiting for us to act on the last word He gave us.

We want a new revelation, but we haven't responded to the previous instruction.

We ask for more power while resisting the obedience that positions us to walk in that power.

And here's something important to understand: Obedience does not earn God's love.

  • God doesn't love you more because you obey perfectly.

  • You cannot earn God's grace.

  • You cannot purchase His favor.

  • You cannot manipulate God into blessing you.

  • Obedience is not about earning God's love.

  • Obedience is about responding to God's love.

We obey because we trust Him.

We obey because we know His ways are higher than ours.

We obey because we believe His instructions are designed for our good and His glory.

We obey because we understand that God can see what we cannot see.

  • Sometimes God says "wait" because He is preparing something.
  • Sometimes He says "no" because He is protecting you.
  • Sometimes He says "go" because He is opening a door.
  • Sometimes He says "let it go" because what you're holding is holding you back.
  • Sometimes He says "stay" because there is something He wants to develop in you before He moves you somewhere else.
  • And sometimes the hardest word God can give us is: "Trust Me."

Obedience means trusting Him even when we don't understand the entire plan.

Think about the disciples in Acts. Jesus didn't give them every detail. He didn't tell them exactly when the Spirit would come. He didn't explain every part of what was going to happen. He simply told them to wait. And they waited.

Then Acts 2 happened. The Holy Spirit came. Power came. Boldness came. Transformation came. And the same disciples who had once been afraid became witnesses who boldly proclaimed Jesus. Their obedience positioned them for the power they needed.

That doesn't mean God is withholding His power from you until you become perfect.

It means that God desires a surrendered vessel through which His power can operate.

The issue isn't perfection. The issue is posture.

Are you surrendered?

Are you listening?

Are you willing?

Are you available?

Are you obeying?

You don't have to understand everything to obey the next thing.

You don't have to know the whole journey to take the next step.

You don't have to see the entire staircase to take the first step.

Today, ask yourself: Where am I drifting?

Where have I heard God but delayed responding?

Where have I been negotiating with an instruction I already know?

Where have I allowed convenience to become more important than obedience?

Where have I chosen my feelings over God's Word?

And perhaps most importantly: What is my next obedient step?

Don't make it complicated.

You may not be able to fix everything today.

But you can take ONE STEP! One obedient step matters. One "yes" matters. One surrender matters. One decision to follow God matters.

Because obedience has a way of opening the door to deeper intimacy with God.

And the closer you walk with Him, the more sensitive you become to His voice.

The more sensitive you become to His voice, the quicker you recognize His direction.

The quicker you recognize His direction, the more readily you respond.

And as you walk in step with Him, you discover something beautiful:

God's power is not merely something you receive—it is something you learn to walk in.

So today, don't just ask God for more power.

Ask Him for a more obedient heart.

Don't just ask Him to use you.

Ask Him to prepare you.

Don't just ask Him to bless your plans.

Ask Him to align your plans with His.

Because sometimes the breakthrough you're praying for is on the other side of the obedience you've been postponing.

Take the step... Say yes... Stay connected... And watch what God can do through an obedient life.

5G CONNECTION — GROW

Obedience is essential to our GROW journey. Grace reminds us that we are saved by God's unmerited favor, not by our performance. Gather reminds us that we need the encouragement and accountability of God's people. Glow calls us to let Christ's character shine through our lives. Grow challenges us to become more like Jesus through His Word, prayer, worship, and obedience. And Go sends us into the world to live out what God has developed within us. We cannot truly grow while consistently resisting God's direction. Growth happens when we hear God's Word and put it into practice. Every act of obedience stretches our faith, deepens our trust, and makes us more sensitive to the voice of God. You don't grow simply by knowing more—you grow by obeying what you know.

Bible Verse

"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." — John 15:5 (KJV)

Reflection Questions

  1. Is there an area of your life where you know God is asking for obedience, but you have been hesitant to follow through?

  2. What instruction from God have you been delaying because it is uncomfortable, inconvenient, or difficult?

  3. What is one practical step of obedience you can take today?

  4. How might your life look different if you trusted God's direction even when you didn't understand His plan?

Today's Declaration

I choose obedience over convenience. I choose God's Word over my feelings. I choose surrender over control. I will remain connected to Christ, listen for His voice, and take the next step He places before me. I may not understand everything God is doing, but I will trust Him enough to obey. As I obey, I will grow, and as I grow, God will use my life for His glory.

Quote
"Many of us aren't walking in God's power daily because we are failing to be obedient to God habitually."

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for loving me even when I have struggled to obey You. Thank You for Your grace that continues to meet me where I am and Your patience that continues to call me higher.

Forgive me for the times I have heard Your voice but delayed my response. Forgive me for the times I have known what Your Word says but allowed my feelings, fears, comfort, or convenience to become more important than obedience.

Lord, search my heart today.

Show me where I am out of step with You.

Show me what I need to surrender.

Show me what I need to release.

Show me what I need to change.

And give me the courage to obey.

Help me understand that obedience isn't about earning Your love. It is my response to the love You have already given me. Teach me to trust You when I don't understand. Teach me to wait when You say wait. Teach me to move when You say move. Teach me to speak when You say speak and to remain silent when You say be still.

Help me remain connected to You like a branch remains connected to the vine.

I don't want to live disconnected from You and then wonder why I feel spiritually empty.

I don't want to ask for power while resisting Your direction.

I don't want to ask You to bless what You never told me to do.

I want my life to be surrendered to You.

Grow me through obedience.

Strengthen me through obedience.

Mature me through obedience.

Make me more like Jesus.

Help me to GROW in grace, in faith, in wisdom, in character, and in my relationship with You.

And when You give me an instruction, give me the courage to say:

"Yes, Lord."

Even when I don't understand.

Even when I don't feel ready.

Even when it is uncomfortable.

Even when I cannot see the outcome.

I choose to trust You.

I choose to obey You.

I choose to remain connected to You.

Father, let my obedience become the pathway through which Your power is displayed in my life.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
